In this historical fiction, entitled THREE WHISTLES I challenged many of the myths perpetrated by such books as The Godfather, The Last Don and movie productions that led to immigrants being labeled as mobsters, mafia members and hooligans. The average American has added these words and others like kike and banana republic to their vocabulary. I detail the incredible life of Italian and Irish immigrants in Lawrence, Massachusetts beginning in 1912, drawing a panoramic picture of their travels, daily travails and dire tribulations. I describe life against the backdrop of the Lawrence Mills, World War II, the Sacco & Vanzetti trial and World War II. I have shown a family in its pursuit of justice and truth, its desire to obtain a good education, its daily struggle to find fair working conditions and its ultimate search of the American dream. What is unique about the story is that I draw from a diary of War hero captured by the Germans in World War II and a number of little-known journals which helped give more authenticity to the times. As a professional social worker, I put the issues of immigration in a different fashion than other writers. Relevant today at this moment in history is Chapter 6, The The Killer Epidemic in 1918, the Spanish Flu that has many parallels to Coronavirus 19.
